Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the amino-acid sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro (MEHFPGP). It was developed from the ACTH(4-7) peptide fragment with the addition of a Pro-Gly-Pro sequence designed to improve molecular stability.
Its defined seven-amino-acid structure has made Semax of interest in laboratory research involving neuropeptide signalling, neuronal cell models, gene-expression changes and neurotrophic pathways.
Experimental research has examined Semax in relation to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-associated signalling, oxidative-stress responses and regulation of genes involved in neuronal function. These characteristics give Semax a distinctive research profile within molecular neuroscience and regulatory peptide studies.
