SS-31, also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131, is a synthetic mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂, where Dmt represents 2,6-dimethyltyrosine.

Its alternating aromatic and basic residues give SS-31 a distinctive affinity for mitochondrial membranes, particularly the phospholipid cardiolipin within the inner mitochondrial membrane. This interaction has made SS-31 an important research compound for investigating mitochondrial membrane organisation, cardiolipin-dependent processes and mitochondrial protein–lipid interactions.

Laboratory research involving SS-31 includes investigation of electron-transport-chain function, mitochondrial membrane potential, cristae organisation, oxidative signalling and the relationship between cardiolipin and cytochrome-c-associated processes.
